WELCOME TO THE VILLAGE TOY CASTLE
real play for hands and minds
As you drive through the rural Huron County countryside you might be surprised when you happen upon an old two-story brick building with a large sign reading ‘Village Toy Castle’ in a sleepy little village at the corners of Highway 4 and Mill Road. “What’s that?” you might think to yourself as you make an impromptu U-turn to check it out. Well, we’re here to tell you.
I think it is safe to say that I never really grew up. I can vividly remember I used to tell kids around the neighbourhood that I would own a toy museum someday, so I guess this idea has always been in the back of my mind somewhere. As I grew older, I moved away from Huron County and spent well over a decade producing documentary films about the history of some of the world’s best known toy brands. I learned enough about the toy industry to know that I wanted to get involved in some little way, but it wasn’t until my wife and I moved back to the area to start our family, build a home, and set down new roots in Brucefield that I really began to imagine ways to make toys domestically: plastic toys with cool stories and fun play-sets.
I started on the long road of teaching myself how to develop plastic injection mold manufacturing and finding new and innovative ways to make that happen here, in a part of the world that has long since forgotten how to. With the dream of creating my own toys firmly planted in my mind, I needed a place to fabricate them. As though it was meant to be an old abandoned building was sitting in our village; waiting, forgotten, and ready to be restored. When work on the renovations began the idea of a showroom as part of the manufacturing space was all I had in mind, but as most dreams go, the idea grew and became something much bigger. I wanted to provide our community with something to experience, something for the entire family to enjoy, a place for people to remember their own childhoods while allowing new generations to discover and experience their own with a place to play, to remember, and to discover something new. And with that, the Village Toy Castle was born.
Someday soon I hope there will be a window that looks into the toy factory I’ve been dreaming of, but for now we are very excited to share with you our passion for all things play in our destination toy store, toy museum and play space. We often say, this is a place for the child in all of us, from ages 1 to 100 there is something here that will put a smile on everyone’s face. Come and visit us at the Village Toy Castle in Brucefield, Ontario and experience real play for hands and minds.
